Kentucky’s market gets a boost

  • The Kentucky League of Cities presented the City of Campbellsville with a 2023 Workers’ Compensation Safety Grant.
  • KLC Insurance Services workers’ compensation members receive the money to help fund various programs and services that reduce liability and make the city safer.
  • KLC has awarded more than $6.3 million in liability and safety grants since 1999.
  • The KLC also offers employee benefits programs, legislative advocacy, financial and municipal law services, training, community development and other resources.

Landscapers face perils at work

  • The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that 142 workers in the landscaping and groundskeeping industries died from workplace injuries.
  • That’s one of the reasons why the U.S. Department of Labor is urging landscaping industry employers to increase protection efforts this year and be cautious about hiring minors.

Mild workers’ comp increase

  • The Washington Department of Labor & Industries had a 4.8% increase in the average price employers and workers pay for workers’ compensation insurance this year.
  • The increase means employers and workers will pay an additional $61 a year, on average, for each full-time employee.
  • Employers and workers pay into the workers’ compensation system to help cover the cost of providing wage and disability benefits for injured workers, as well as medical treatment of work-related injuries and illnesses.
  • General wage inflation and increasing medical costs all make it more expensive to provide this workplace safety net.

Report: Opionds decline

  • Enlyte released the third portion of its Pharmacy Solutions Drug Trends Series Report, which analyzes the state of pharmacy trends in workers’ comp.
  • Opioid scripts dropped 1.3% and costs were down 2.5% from 2021.
  • While opioids continue to decline as a percentage of total script volume and costs, it remains essential to promote evidence-based risk management strategies.
  • The number of injured workers using opioids has continued to decline, decreasing by 2.7 percentage points in 2022.
