Medisca to Pay $22M for Inflating Compound Prescriptions Ingredients

• Medisca will pay $21.75 million to resolve allegations concerning the establishment of false and inflated average wholesale prices (AWPs) for two ingredients used in compound prescriptions submitted in false prescription claims to the Defense Health Agency.
• That agency administers the TRICARE Program for the Department of Defense and the Department of Labor’s Office of Workers’ Compensation Programs.
• Medisca’s alleged fraudulent pricing scheme enabled its pharmacy customers to bill federal healthcare programs inflated amounts – often thousands of dollars per prescription – for compound formulations containing those ingredients.
• In one example, the company allegedly acquired resveratrol from manufacturers for about $0.37 per gram, then repackaging and selling it for under $2 per gram. It then reported an AWP for the ingredient at $777 per gram, according to the Justice Department.

NY Seminars This Week on Workers’ Compensation Basics

• New York’s State Office of the Advocate for Business is offering free presentations this week together with the state Workers’ Compensation Board’s Office of the Advocate for Business on the basics of the workers’ compensation system.
