Minnesota Revises Workers’ Comp for Out-of-State Workers

Minnesota commissioners make revision to workers’ comp

  • Commissioners in Nobles County, Minnesota, approved a policy revision to the county’s current out-of-state workers’ compensation coverage, which was first enacted in early 2022.
  • Previously, county employees living in South Dakota and Iowa did not receive worker’s compensation if they regularly telecommuted from out of state.
  • While the Minnesota Counties Intergovernmental Trust (MCIT) is unable to sell workers’ comp insurance to or for other states, Luing said the trust connected her with an agency that could sell the insurance to the interested counties.
  • The proposed annual rate of the workers’ comp premiums is $1,607.

City settles workers’ comp claim

  • Paterson, N.J., agreed to pay $47,046 to settle a workers’ compensation claim filed by Paterson’s former personnel director, Michelle Ralph-Rawls, who was injured in a fall at City Hall in 2019.
  • Ralph-Rawls spent almost 40% of her time on Paterson’s payroll on injury leave because of the injury.
  • Major Andre Sayegh appointed Ralph-Rawls as personnel director several months after he took office in 2018.
  • The City Council voted 6-0 to approve Ralph-Rawls’ workers’ compensation settlement.

Province seeking workers’ comp feedback

  • Nova Scotia is asking for public feedback on ways to improve its workers’ compensation system and prevent workplace harassment.
  • The Workers’ Compensation Board of Nova Scotia provides workplace injury insurance to Nova Scotia employers and employees.
  • The compensation system was last reviewed in 2002, and the province lags behind other jurisdictions in areas such as workers’ access to coverage, employer assessment rates and benefits.
  • The department is also consulting the public on harassment in the workplace. Information gathered will be used to help create rules so employers can prevent harassment and support healthier and safer workplaces.

Green Cross for Safety Award winners announced

  • The National Safety Council recently honored three organizations working toward and succeeding in preventing injuries and saving lives with its renowned Green Cross for Safety awards.
  • Given during the 24th annual Green Cross Celebration, presented by U. S. Steel, these accolades recognize the best and brightest in three categories: safety advocacy, safety excellence and safety innovation.
  • Nine finalists for the three award categories were selected, reviewed and evaluated.
  • The 2023 Winners are: Schneider (Safety Advocate Award, sponsored by First Student); Walgreens (Safety Excellence Award, sponsored by UPS); and APTIM (Safety Innovation Award, sponsored by Amazon).
