Workers hurt in explosion near Arthur Ashe Stadium
Three workers suffered burns after an explosion near Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens.
The blast occurred just after 1:30 p.m. at a building just across from the tennis center in Flushing, near train tracks and the Citi Field complex.
Two of the men who were injured were electrical contractors replacing a generator or transformer when it explosion occurred.
Two people suffered burns as a result, but were not considered to be seriously injured, fire officials said. Another person may have suffered serious burns, and was taken to the hospital.
North Carolina man killed by a tractor-trailer
- Jason W. Bare, of Harmony, N.C., was killed when he was struck by a tractor-trailer in the parking lot of a plant.
- The 44-year-old Bare died at the scene and troopers responded to the Tyson Foods chicken by-product processing plant to investigate.
- The tractor-trailer, operated by Gary Wayne Davidson, was backing toward an unloading bay and struck Bare, who an employee of Tyson Foods, the patrol said.
- The investigation is ongoing.
Teamsters want a safety plan from UPS
- The Teamsters Union wants UPS to provide information on any plan the company has to protect employees, combat heat illness, and install or replace relief equipment for workers amid increasingly extreme weather conditions.
- The 1.2 million-member Teamsters, which represents 350,000 full- and part-time UPS workers, sent the formal request to UPS management.
- The international union’s Safety and Health Department instructed the shipping and logistics giant to provide a heat illness and injury prevention plan.
- The union also wants UPS to address hazard assessments for all job classifications, training materials or procedures the company provides its own managers.
Tysons Food workers killed in North Carolina
- Jason Wayne Barre, a Tyson Foods plant worker, was killed at a processing facility in Harmony, N.C.
- Barre, 44, working at River Valley Ingredients, a division of Tyson, when he was hit by a tractor-trailer rig backing up to the loading dock at the chicken by-product plant.
- After being struck about 7 p.m. by a truck driven by another Tyson worker, Gary Wayne Davidson of Statesville, Bare was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.
- Tyson Foods released a statement: “We’re working with local authorities to investigate what happened and appreciate the quick response and support of local emergency responders.”
