Washington business owner sentenced for workers comp scam
- A Kennewick, Wash., business owner was sentenced to 30 days of electronic home monitoring after he pleaded guilty to a workers’ compensation scam.
- Rodney Eugene Dietrich, 47, pleaded guilty to failing to provide workers’ compensation insurance.
- He also conducted his business without workers’ compensation insurance.
- In 2016, Dietrich pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor offense of skipping workers’ compensation insurance, and most recently, he pleaded guilty to a felony charge.
Calif. private self-Insured claim frequency hits 14-year high
- Workers’ compensation claim frequency among California’s private self-insured employers last year hit the highest level since 2007.
- In addition, both medical-only and indemnity claim volume rose, according to the California Workers’ Compensation Institute.
- The data includes the total number of covered employees, medical-only and indemnity claim counts, and total paid and incurred losses on those claims through the end of the year.
- Private self-insured employers covered 2.39 million California employees last year and reported 93,430 claims in 2021, compared to 86,503 in 2019.
Steel mill worker dies in Ohio
- A worker at a steel mill in Southwest Ohio died in an accident during “routine maintenance,” according to reports.
- The incident occurred at Middletown Works at the hot strip mill in the facility.
- The victim was not identified.
- “Cleveland-Cliffs expresses its deepest sympathies to the employee’s family and the Company will provide the necessary support to the family during this difficult time,” Cleveland-Cliffs spokesperson Patricia Persico said in a statement.
Construction workers shot in Indiana
- Three construction workers were injured outside a home being built in Indianapolis.
- The three workers sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were expected to survive, police said.
- Detectives canvassed the neighborhood looking for witnesses and other evidence.
- The shooting involving the construction workers occurred less than a quarter mile away from a fatal shooting that occurred on June 30.
