Facebook Messenger scammers fleecing people

  • Con artists are using Facebook Messenger to scam people into thinking they are eligible for funds in unclaimed workers’ compensation.
  • These schemes fraudulently offer as much as $1 million in benefits. T
  • The scheme is a variation of the government grant scam where victims are contacted through Facebook messenger with the offer of a free grant that doesn’t have to be paid back.
  • In this latest scam, a con artist impersonates a Facebook friend,  claiming they saw the victim’s name on a list of people who are owed compensation and the so-called “agent” can walk them through the process.

Connecticut to cur workers comp rates

  • Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont announced that businesses around the state will see another rate decrease in workers’ compensation insurance beginning on Jan. 1, 2023.
  • The Connecticut Insurance Department has approved an annual filing with decreases of 3% to workers’ compensation pure premium loss costs.
  • There will be no change in rates for assigned risks.
  • This marks the ninth consecutive year that the department has approved rate decreases for workers’ compensation insurance, saving Connecticut businesses more than $300 million.

Workers comp attorney headed to prison

  • A workers’ compensation applicant attorney from Orange County, Calif., was sentenced to four years in state prison for workers’ compensation fraud.
  • He was ordered to pay over $700,000 in restitution to 17 insurance carriers for participating in two insurance fraud referral schemes.
  • Jon Woods, 61, of Cypress, Calif., was convicted of 37 felony counts of insurance fraud along with an aggravated white-collar crime sentencing enhancement.
  • District Attorney Todd Spitzer said his office is “committed to ensuring a level playing field for business owners and insurance companies.”

A SpaceX fined after a worker in coma

  • A SpaceX technician suffered a head injury that placed him in a coma for two months, accorded to OSHA.
  • The technician was working at the company’s factory in Hawthorne, Calif. when a fuel controller cover broke free and he suffered the injury.
  • The technician was taken to an area hospital with a skull fracture and head trauma.
  • SpaceX was fined $18,475 by OSHA for safety violations.
