Applicants not covered under workers’ comp law
- A bus carrying numerous applicants was en route to the U.S. consulate in Monterrey, Mexico, to obtain visas and then travel to Beaucoup Crawfish of Eunice, Lousiana.
- Before reaching the consulate, the bus was in an accident and injured three of the applicants who filed workers’ compensation claims.
- For entitlement to those benefits, an employee must be injured “in the course and scope of employment,” according to the relevant statute.
- Beaucoup denied liability, claiming the three plaintiffs had not yet completed the hiring process and thus, their injuries occurred outside “the course and scope of employment.” The workers’ comp judge agreed and dismissed the plaintiffs’ claims.

Another lawsuit after Walmart shooting
- A survivor of a shooting at Walmart in Virginia alleges the shooting was a personal attack against her in a newly refiled lawsuit and is seeking $50 million in damages against the national retailer.
- Tyler was nearly shot during the shooting, but survived, but six others were killed.
- During an April court hearing, attorneys argued the case should fall under workers’ compensation and have argued the lawsuit should be dismissed.
- Under workers’ compensation, employees could be repaid for medical expenses or lost wages, but would not be compensated for lawsuit damages.

- Investopedia reviewed seven of the top carpenter insurance companies.
- The company took into account: the rate at which the company provides quotes via Insureon (40%), customer satisfaction as measured by the NAIC)complaint index (30%), average premiums (20%), and AM Best ratings for financial strength (10%).
- The “Best General Liability Insurance and BOP” was Nationwide, while the “Best Workers’ Comp for Few Employees” was CNA.
- The “Highest Quote Rates for Workers’ Comp” was the Contractors Bonding and Insurance Company (RLI)
and the “Fewest Complaints” was Acuity.

Virginia Workers’ Compensation Commission named top workplace.
- The Virginia Workers’ Compensation Commission has been named one of the Richmond area’s Top Workplaces for the third consecutive year by the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
- The commission is staffed by 260 employees, most of them based out of the central office in downtown Richmond. Others are spread across regional offices in Bristol, Fairfax, Harrisonburg, Manassas, Roanoke and Virginia Beach.
- The commission was founded over a century ago and incorporated after the state legislature passed the Virginia Workers’ Compensation Act, which manages and resolves claims from workers who need monetary assistance as a result of injuries sustained on company time.
- The commission had a “nimble approach” to adjusting work styles during the COVID-19 pandemic.
