Virginia cancer measure for workers comp
- A bill in Virginia was passed to expand the workers’ compensation presumption of compensability for certain cancers to include thyroid and bladder cancers.
- The illness would have to cause death or disability for firefighters who have completed five years of service.
- At least five Virginia Beach firefighters have been diagnosed with some form of cancer recently, all of whom spent hours at the scene of a jet crash in Virginia Beach 11 years ago.
- While it’s unknown if that toxic brew caused the firefighters’ cancer, a connection will be presumed along with qualification for certain benefits.
Officer files lawsuit to receive workers’ comp
- A fire and safety officer filed a lawsuit after suffering should and elbow injuries at work to get workers’ compensation.
- A workers’ compensation administrative law judge found the applicant entitled to temporary disability indemnity benefits for certain specified periods.
- The judge found the applicant entitled to additional temporary disability benefits.
- S panel determined that the doctor’s reports were not substantial evidence to support an award of temporary disability indemnity benefits.

Physical medicine common in workers comp cases
- Extended physical medicine use was relatively frequent in most study states and less coordination of care was among the key factors associated with a higher likelihood of having extended its use.
- Those are the finding of a new study by the Workers Compensation Research Institute.
- Some claims with extended PM use may have more serious or chronic conditions that need additional services.
- The frequency of extended PM use appears to be higher than the rate of chronic back pain reported in other studies, suggesting other factors affect the use of extended PM in workers’ compensation.

- The Small Business Develop Center at San Juan College in New Mexico is hosting a workshop for employers on workers’ compensation on March 9.
- This free workshop is geared toward small-business owners and will cover the basics of workers’ compensation, safety and compliance.
- Presenters include Angela Gettler speaking on safety, Avalyn Harris speaking on compliance, and Julie Head speaking on workers’ compensation.
- Attendees can learn about safety consulting services offered by the Workers’ Compensation Administration and about employers’ responsibilities under workers’ compensation.
