3M Suing 3 Lawyers Over Alleged Black Lung Fraud

  • 3M Company is reportedly suing three attorneys in a Kentucky federal court over their filings of fraudulent and frivolous lawsuits on behalf of miners with black lung.
  • The company’s lawsuit claims attorneys Glenn Hammond of Pike County, Michael Martin of Friendswood, Texas, and John Givens of Mississippi violated the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act.
  • 3M alleges that the attorneys filed complaints knowing they supposedly contained false statements regarding client coal miners’ use of 3M dust masks.
  • The company has faced hundreds of millions of dollars in litigation costs related to lawsuits brought by coal miners over its “dust masks,” or respirators, which can be worn in mines as a protective measure against dust, according to filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Reuters reported.
