NJ Lawyers Okayed to Pay Referral Fees to Non-NJ Attorneys
- New Jersey’s Supreme Court has ruled that attorneys certified in the Garden State are allowed to pay referral fees to attorneys in other states, regardless of whether or not those attorneys are licensed to practice law in the state.
- The ruling came in response to Opinion 745 of the Supreme Court Advisory Committee on Professional Ethics (ACPE), which had had concluded that “certified lawyers generally may not pay referral fees to out-of-state lawyers” who are not licensed in New Jersey.
- The high court disagreed after its review, ruling that the payment of referral fees to out-of-state attorneys does not raise concerns about the unauthorized practice of law.

- Insurers in the workers’ compensation segment could be in for a shock as the main health costs of poor air quality begin to show up as insurance losses, according to a new report from Swiss air quality technology company, IQ Air.
- Its seventh annual World Air Quality Report drew data from IQ Air’s global air monitoring system gathered from more than 40,000 monitoring stations in 138 countries.
- The most polluted major U.S. city was Los Angeles, while nearby Ontario, California was the most polluted city of any size in the country. Seattle, Washington was the cleanest major city in the U.S.
- According to the report, poor air quality can translate into higher insurance costs through workers’ compensation payouts.
