Oh, Oh, Oh, Obesity Drugs Are Coming

While obesity has historically been a condition considered under workers’ compensation, that could be changing with the growing use of drugs like Ozempic.
That’s because delays in recovery and surgery risks associated with obesity may prompt some payers to rethink coverage.
Dr. Robert Hall, M.D., medical director for Optum Workers’ Comp and Auto No-Fault, recently noted that for an overweight individual, an injury can make even very basic movements difficult.
Hall will be among the panelists presenting the session “The Incoming Wave of Weight Loss Medications in Comp: Is Your Program Prepared?,” at the National Comp conference in October.
