Workers comp linked to heat
- Traumatic injuries of Oregon workers in the agricultural and construction industries are significantly higher during periods of high heat compared with periods of more moderate weather.
- These were the findings of a new study by Oregon State University’s College of Public Health and Human Sciences.
- “And essentially the biggest takeaway is that when temperatures got above 75 degrees, we saw an increase of 15-29% for injury risk,” said Richard Evoy, lead author of the recently released research paper.
- The researcher stressed that this is a big overview study, which doesn’t break down specific cases. But again, it does show turning up the heat turns up the injury numbers too.
Worker injured in explosion dies
- One of the workers injured in an explosion at the refinery in Come By Chance, Newfoundland, has died, local officials said.
- The explosion at the refinery just west of St. John’s sent eight people to the hospital.
- Six workers have returned home, but one remains in hospitalized and his condition has not been released.
- Glenn Nolan, president of United Steelworkers Local 9316 which represents much staff at the refinery, identified the man who died as union member Shawn Peddle.
Safety campaign ahead of soccer’s World Cup
- The Qatar Ministry of Labour and other officials launched a joint awareness campaign themed “Occupational Safety and Health… Our Choice to Maintain a Safe Work Environment.”
- The goal is to raise awareness among employers and workers at worksites and labor accommodations.
- Qatar has been heavily criticized for not protecting workers during the construction of the stadium for the world-renowned tournament that starts in November.
- Inspection teams will ensure that all procedures and requirements for occupational safety and health are implemented at worksites and labor accommodations.
